It is said that one day God came to visit Adam and Eve. They showed him their home and their children. But Eve decided to hide some of her children because they were not washed. God of course knew that they were hidden, and so he said, "That which is hidden from me shall be hidden from man".
The children became the first elves, invisible to man, unless they wish to reveal themselves.
